Why Most Small Businesses Miss Out
According to the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), India has over 63 million MSMEs. Yet a huge percentage of eligible businesses never apply for government support โ simply because they don't know about it, or think the paperwork is too complicated.
The truth? Many of these schemes have been simplified dramatically in recent years. Digital applications, Aadhaar-based verification, and direct bank transfers have made the process far more accessible than ever before.
1. MUDRA Loan (Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana)

- Kishore โ โน50,001 to โน5 lakh (for businesses looking to expand)
- Tarun โ โน5,00,001 to โน10 lakh (for established businesses scaling up)

2. PMEGP (Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme)
Best for: New businesses and first-time entrepreneurs
The PMEGP scheme provides loans for setting up new manufacturing or service enterprises. The key attraction? A government subsidy of 15โ35% on the project cost.
- Maximum project cost: โน50 lakh (manufacturing), โน20 lakh (services)
- Subsidy: 15โ25% in urban areas, 25โ35% in rural areas (higher for SC/ST/women/minorities)
- Your contribution: Only 5โ10% of the project cost

3. Stand-Up India

The Stand-Up India scheme facilitates bank loans between โน10 lakh and โน1 crore for setting up a new enterprise in manufacturing, services, or trading.
- Available to women of any category and SC/ST entrepreneurs
- At least 51% ownership required by the SC/ST or woman applicant
- Repayment period: Up to 7 years

4. CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for MSEs)
Best for: Businesses that need loans but don't have collateral
Under the CGTMSE scheme, the government guarantees loans up to โน5 crore given by banks to MSEs โ meaning you don't need to pledge property, gold, or any other collateral.
- Coverage: Up to 85% guarantee on loans up to โน5 lakh, 75% for larger amounts
- Who's eligible: Both new and existing MSEs in manufacturing and services
- How it works: Your bank applies for the guarantee on your behalf. You don't deal with CGTMSE directly
5. Udyam Registration (MSME Registration)
Best for: Every small business โ it's free and unlocks all other benefits
Udyam Registration is the official MSME registration by the Government of India. It's completely free, Aadhaar-based, and can be completed in 10 minutes. Benefits include:
- Priority sector lending from banks
- Eligibility for government tenders (price preference and exclusive tenders)
- Subsidized patent and trademark registration

If you haven't done this yet, stop reading and register now. It takes 10 minutes and opens the door to everything else on this list.
6. Digital India โ MSME Digitization Subsidies
Best for: Businesses moving from paper to digital operations
Under the Digital India initiative, the government provides subsidies and incentives for MSMEs to adopt digital tools โ everything from ERP software to digital payment systems. Various state governments also offer their own digitization incentives.
The first step in digitization is often the simplest: switching from paper records to a digital khata and invoicing system. Tools like UdhaarBill make this transition easy and free, qualifying you for future digital readiness assessments.
7. PM Vishwakarma Yojana

How to Improve Your Chances of Approval
Regardless of which scheme you apply for, these factors increase your chances:
Keep Proper Financial Records
Banks and government agencies want to see that you run an organized business. Digital billing records, monthly sales data, and clear customer accounts make a strong impression. This is another reason why digitizing your khata matters beyond just daily convenience.
File GST Returns Regularly
If you're GST-registered, filing returns on time proves business activity and revenue. Irregular filing raises red flags for lenders. Our GST guide for small businesses covers everything you need to know about staying compliant.
Maintain a Good CIBIL Score
Your personal CIBIL score matters, even for business loans. Pay credit card bills on time, avoid defaults, and check your score periodically. A score above 700 significantly improves your approval chances.
Start Small, Then Scale
If you've never taken a business loan before, start with a Shishu MUDRA loan (up to โน50,000). Repay it on time. This builds your credit history and makes it easier to get larger loans later.
"I didn't know about CGTMSE until my CA mentioned it. I got a โน3 lakh loan without pledging anything โ not even my shop. That money helped me add a cold storage unit, and my dairy product sales tripled." โ Lakshmi Amma, Provision Store, Thrissur
